    Housed in these packages our souls haunt the earth accumulating wisdom and experience like snowballs until they move on to who-knows-where? Other packages? Other planes of existence? It’s all too mysterious to absorb but I like to think about it. And when I take a photo, do a portrait, I am all too aware that pictures are not just pictures. Faces are more than faces. We are so much more than what we see.

    Why does this matter? How is this relevant to the About Us page? Well, we are not automatons. We are not ants. We choose where we work, many of us. and that choice is reflected in our values, and our hearts. When I go to an About Us page I want to feel something. I want to feel passion and concern and all the human values that add up to what a company can be. 

    That’s why I don’t just take pictures. That’s why I invest time in each person to help bring out their best selves. My photos have depth, and emotion, they contain three dimensional human beings. I’m not interested in flat, uniform...

    Corporate portraits don’t have to be, well, so corporate. The spirit and personality of an organization, what it represents, its so-called ‘brand’, is embodied by the people who go to work there. So you want the people themselves to shine through. If every photo looks the same, if there’s not some element of individuality in the photo, then they come across as automatons and not individual human beings. My job is to stand back and help that individuality to come through by suggesting lightscapes and backdrops that best exemplify the personality of the brand while also highlighting the unique qualities of each person who makes it what it is. If you hire me to be your photographer what you get is someone who strives to capture your people as people while also suggesting an element of style that jibes with your brand story. Often that’s subtle. But subtlety is all it takes.

    The impetus for ODE was really that moment when I was at Nickelodeon, standing in the kitchen getting coffee when a co-worker I hardly knew walked in. We started talking and I quickly realized that we had a lot in common, that I had been there working with him for more than five years and didn’t know who he was. Wouldn’t it be great, I thought, if we could discover each other sooner?

    I thought long and hard about it. Imagine if ODEs hung on the walls of conference room, or if there was a coffee table book you could read when you joined the team? What a gift this would be to your people, to honor them with a photograph and a profile. What if we shared each other’s stories? Wouldn’t this do more for unity and retention than snacks and outings?

    More than anything else I imagined that ODEs would bolster team chemistry. I wanted to know not just where people once worked, but what they believed in, what they’d overcome. I can learn more about you from a quote, a lyric from a song, a line from...
